Holiday Time with the Cousins in Beaverkill

Mimi, Poppie, Aunt Karissa and Lydia and Violet and Aunt Katie and Emma Kate came to welcome the New Year in Beaverkill.

There was snowperson construction:

Lots of swimming and basketball at the Beaverkill Valley Inn:

A resounding rendition of Roger the Red Nosed Moose (In 1939, department store Montgomery Ward hired Robert L. May to create a coloring book for Christmas. May had an idea to make a moose the main character until Montgomery Ward executives decided a reindeer was friendlier. Being a reindeer no doubt made it easier to incorporate Rudolph with the eight other tiny reindeer. As May was creating his iconic reindeer, he tried out a variety of names. Among them, Rollo, Roger and Reginald!):

And a great time had by the whole gang:

Christmas List of Legos for Will

Will presented me with his Christmas list of desired Lego components. Santa, this is your moment!

Update: Construction has begun on the railroad crossing components. Next up: Safety fence and lighting deployment, playground design, determining the location for the ATM, adding the restaurant, and foliage placement. Designing a Lego city is serious business.

Soccer in the Snow

Mom had to double-check that the date was 10/18/15! An early flurry surprised the players on the field. Will is in the red hat and his buddy Philip is getting ready to pass.

2015 Shoo-fly Pie Taste-Off

Everyone was on the edge of their
seats awaiting the outcome of the Summer 2015 Shoo-fly Pie Taste-Off. After this year's (semi-)blind taste test, the results are in: Despite worthy competition from runner-up Dutch Haven, when you're next in Lancaster County, be sure to stop in at Forest View Bakery in New Danville, PA for Miriam's Shoo-fly Pie. A wet-bottom experience with an intensity of molasses awaits your fork, supported by a crust that is well integrated into the pie body and complemented by a powdery finish up top.

City Fishin'

We headed up to the Harlem Meer in Central Park with Will's friend Robbie to try our hand at fishing. Central Park provided the poles, along with corn kernels for bait, to which the fish responded with a shrug of their gills and a, "Meh!" Although Robbie somehow managed to land two fish, we learned that we needed longer lines and, most importantly, hot dogs for bait. Fish, take notice, we're coming  back prepared!

Mother's Day 2015

Central Park Exploring

We celebrated Will's friend Luc's 7th birthday on a beautiful spring day in Central Park. His family knows all the best spots to explore, and the boys had an amazing morning splashing, climbing, running, and jumping.

Self-Poem

I have hair as blonde as wheat
I have eyes as blue as a blue jay
I have skin that is smooth
like a window
I have a smile that makes
people "feeeeeel" good
My heart is red
like a cardinal
flying

Top of the Rock!

Will had so much fun climbing the rocks in Central Park with our friends Ava and Elise, who were visiting from North Carolina. These kids are fast climbers!

Bubble Brainstorm

Brody, Pierre, Zach, Max, Jasper and Will experimented with bubbles during a class field trip at the New York Hall of Science. Will's favorite fact he learned about bubbles is that no matter what shape bubble wand you use (e.g. square, star-shaped, triangle) to make a bubble, the bubble always turns out to be a sphere! Why? Bubbles are "minimal surface structures," which means that they always hold the air inside of them with the least possible surface area. A bubble's thin wall of soap is pulling in while the air inside of it is pushing out. The geometric form with the least surface area for any given volume is always a sphere, not a pyramid or a cube or any other form.

Will's classmate Sofia illustrates this fact, at left.
